A Swiss-system tournament is a non-eliminating tournament format that features a fixed number of rounds of competition, but considerably fewer than for a round-robin tournament; thus each competitor (team or individual) does not play all the other competitors. Competitors meet one-on-one in each round and are paired using a set of rules designed to ensure that each competitor plays opponents with a similar running score, but does not play the same opponent more than once. The winner is the competitor with the highest aggregate points earned in all rounds. With an even number of participants, all competitors play in each round.
- In Season-5 we will be using the accelerated Swiss-system to reduce the number of rounds needed.
- We will have 5 rounds to complete the tournament.
- Every player will play one match in each round.
- No player ever gets eliminated so every player gets to play till the end of the tournament in each round.
- Typically no player plays against the same opponent more than once
- We will combine Elite and Pro players into a single pool
- Every match win is treated as one tournament point and every loss zero tournament points.
- In the accelerated system Elite players will start with a single tournament point for the purpose of choosing their opponents. So in the first round Elite players will play Elite players and Pro players will play Pro players. If there is an odd number of players it is possible that one Elite player will play a Pro player in the first round itself.
- After the first round 50% of the Elite players would have won their match and hence will have 2 tournament points, 50% of Elite players will have lost their match and will remain at 1 tournament point. Similarly 50% of Pro players will have won and will be on 1 tournament point and 50% will remain at zero tournament points.
- In the second round all Elite players at 2 tournament points will be paired against another player at 2 tournament points and play each other. Similarly players (Elite & Pro) at 1 tournament point will be paired against each other and Pro players at zero tournament points will be paired against each other.
- In the third round we deduct the tournament point given to Elite players for the purpose of the accelerated Swiss system in round one and all players are matched up against other players who are at the same running tournament point score. This will bring the bottom Elite players close to the top Pro players.
- From the third round onwards the same rules apply to all players till we complete 5 rounds and obtain a clear winner and runner up in the Elite and Pro category of players.
- After 5 rounds if we have a tie for the winner or runners-up the Tie-Break rules will come into effect.
Tie-Break Rules:- The weighted game scores (e.g: a 2:0 match win gives the winner 3 weighted game points, 2:1 gives winner 2 weighted game points and loser 1) is also tracked which will be used in case a tie break is needed at the end of the tournament. A player with the same tournament points as another but higher weighted games points is determined to be the winner.
- If the two tied players have played a match before, the result of that prior match determines the winner
- Finally if even after applying the tie break rules above there is still a tie, we will have a tie-break match to break the tie between any two tied players.
- With 46 entrants (estimated) in season-5, each round will have 23 matches.
- 5 rounds will require 116 matches.Â
- We will need to restrict the matches to a best of 3 games to optimise time.
- In case there is an odd number of players it is possible a player will receive a bye in any round and is treated as if they have won that round. That player will not be eligible for another bye in any future rounds. In addition any bye will give one tournament point to the player and only two weighted game points to the winner.
- Players who are absent during any round will forfeit their match and will be treated as having given a bye to their opponent. They can however continue to participate in the next round if they are available again at the arena
